Tis Gaius's speech given to the Warrior of Light at the Praetorium. It preceded his first defeat at her hands.

is that who we're talking about
shortly after, more text
is this him
is he fucking HERE
[ And people are joking with him? ]
no subject
[ He doesn't offer explanation - partly because he knows if Ezar is mad he won't be able to accept it in any form, and it will only serve to make him angrier. ]

in the city??

[ He uses 'care' deliberately. Ezar will know they are actually partnered. It wouldn't be a hard stretch to guess either, though. ]
I try not to think of it often myself, so I am sorry for not addressing it sooner.

Well.
He brought Alphinaud back to us. And spoke of destroying stockpiles of Black Rose before it could be released. He told me the legatus he once was is dead.
Mayhap he is. I don't know.

I have... mixed feelings. The Garleans are the reason I was sent away from Corvos at all, to speak nothing of the Eorzeans subjugated under his rule. I know -
I know, objectively, that he was not the worst Legatus. But that comforts me little.

But then I think of that awful council with Varis. How nothing could be done because he didn't just refuse to concede; he altogether didn't think he was wrong. How Yotsuyu died because she thought any other escape was beyond her. Without people willing to change, and people willing to let them, the only end to the war is conquest. Or annihilation.
I'll not forgive him. But I don't know that I can dismiss his intentions, either.

I try to remember, when I think of the war ending, that Garlemald is not just the military men and women. There are civilians - men, women and children who may not trust us regardless, but whom are innocent of any actions taken against us. There are many who will have to answer for their crimes as well.
[ Bodies in the snow - he thinks of Alisaie and Alphinaud, in Tertium. Trying to help those who will accept it and accepting that not everyone will. ]
I can promise you it ends.

And — I suppose, had it not been for that missive, we all might never have known he was even here to begin with. He's not caused any commotion that I can tell. Whereas Garlemald at its worst isn't possible to ignore even if one should want to.
But if he upsets you, he'll have made enemies of both of us. You know that, don't you?
no subject
I understand. But he has not reached out to me or done so. The nature of my upset is the manner in which Corvos was targeted - an act ironically I am aware wasn't actually Gaius's fault.
The empire was founded and rallied on the desire to take back their homeland. Should I lay blame at anyone's feet - it would be an ascian, and one in particular.
He does represent that - or a version of himself does. Moreover, he targeted you and those dearest to you at the Castrum. It simply makes the situation complicated.

I suppose it's not something we need to have an answer to now. Or to have an answer to at all, if we'd rather just let it alone.

My beautiful Warrior of Darkness.
But you are correct - tis not something we must figure out the answer to right away. Or ever in this place. Gaius seems content to let those who care approach him and leave those alone who would not.

[Her babygirl, but some pet names are just not tonally appropriate for the moment.]
Mayhap we'd be wise to do the same, then. Leave it alone. See what comes of it in its own time, for what comes to pass may prove to be nothing at all.
no subject
But... if you should have concerns or need to speak about it, that does not make it taboo to talk about it.
[ That's for Summer, yes - but also for Ezar, should he need it. ]
